At Side By Side we know diversity is an incomplete and often empty concept in the absence of community. Community exists where there is real commitment to go beyond rhetoric, beyond the limitations of tolerance, beyond the accusations, attacks and suspicions often experienced when people try to talk through the tough issues. Community exists where there is the courage to tell the truth, the capacity to listen with respect, the integrity to match words with actions and the willingness to hang in there and work for real change.

Side By Side is lead by Alvin Herring

Alvin is the CEO and Lead Facilitator of Side By Side. Alvin brings over 20 years of experience as a trainer and consultant in the areas of leadership development, community building / organizing, diversity and strategic planning. Alvin is the former COO of the National Coalition Building Institute, Washington D.C., where he led diversity and leadership trainings for thousands of participants across the country and internationally. At Side By Side, Alvin has worked with a wide array of clients from Fortune 500 executives to grass roots community activists, from kindergarten students to senior citizens. Alvin operates from the guiding principles of community organizing. He leads with a real belief in change and he inspires hope that people can organize for the good of the planet and the good of humanity.
